BIOGRAPHY
Pieter Stathis is a professional cinematographer, camera operator and steadicam operator with 15 years of experience shooting dozens of feature films, television series, commercials and music videos across North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and the South Pacific. Born in Kyparissia, Greece in 1966, Pieter immigrated to Canada, gaining an Honours BA in Linguistics and Fine Arts and working as a photojournalist in Toronto. Since moving out to Vancouver in 1992, Pieter has been the cinematographer on over sixty projects. His directorial debut, the 24-minute short Khamelion, premiered to a costumed crowd at the Pacifique Cinemateque on Halloween 2000. When not on set, Pieter teaches cinematography and advances in film production at the University of British Columbia. He holds membership in local camera union IATSE 669 and is a long-time member of Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society. Pieter’s love of cinematography comes from shooting in real locations with a hands-on approach to lighting, physical camerawork and ongoing collaborations with directors.
Pieter's four-part HD mini-series "Secret Files of the Inquisition" received the 2006 Leo Award for Best Cinematography in a documentary series and was also nominated for a 2006 Gemini in the same category. Pieter recently returned from four months in Australia and New Zealand where he was shooting the international HD mini-series “Captain Cook: Obsession and Discovery”.
